Mexico's majestic training ship is one of the Armada's most-loved visitors. Will it return in 2027? Here's the latest — and the dramatic story behind the question.
The Cuauhtémoc is a sail-training barque of the Mexican Navy, named after the last Aztec emperor and known as the “Knight of the Seas.” A floating ambassador for Mexico, it has been one of the Armada de Rouen's most popular guests for years, drawing big crowds whenever it visits.
In May 2025, the Cuauhtémoc was involved in a serious accident in New York, colliding with the Brooklyn Bridge. Two crew members tragically lost their lives and several were injured, and the ship's masts were badly damaged. It was a shock felt across the tall-ship world.
The good news is that the ship has since been repaired and is back at sea. Its survival and return have been warmly welcomed by sailors and Armada fans alike.
As of the organisers' June 2026 briefing, the Cuauhtémoc's participation is probable but not confirmed. The Armada is in contact with the Mexican authorities and embassies and has received an “intention to come,” but — as with all the ships — nothing is signed, and plans can change with international scheduling. The organisers are reportedly competing with other ports to secure its visit.
