1. 🚢 Newhaven → Dieppe ferry (our pick)
Crossing: ~4 hours · Operator: DFDS · Dieppe → Rouen: ~55 km, about 1 hour (A150) or ~50 min by train
Newhaven is a 50-minute train from London Victoria or Brighton, and the ferry lands you in Dieppe — the closest French port to Rouen of any channel route. Dieppe sits just short of an hour's drive from the city centre, which makes this the shortest total door-to-door option for drivers from London and the South East.
There's a practical bonus too: if the Armada crowds build up on the roads into Rouen, arriving via Dieppe keeps your final approach short and simple, with an easy route via the A150 and D6015 into the city. On the way home you can unwind with one of Normandy's best weekend markets at Dieppe before boarding.
Foot passengers can also use this route — you'll find rail and coach links between Dieppe and Rouen (worth a visit in their own right), and the port is compact and easy to reach on foot or by taxi.

2. ⚓ Portsmouth → Le Havre & Caen ferries
From Portsmouth on the south coast, Brittany Ferries runs two Normandy routes that both work well for the Armada:
- Portsmouth → Le Havre (Ouistreham tip-in about 3h30): France's largest Channel port, about 1h15 drive from Rouen on the A131/A13. Note that route schedules and sailings can change year to year, so check availability when you book.
- Portsmouth → Caen (about 5h45): A longer crossing but often cheaper, landing near the Orne estuary. From Caen it's about 120 km (~1h30) to Rouen on the A13.

For most travellers we'd rank them: Newhaven–Dieppe first (if you're south-east based), then Portsmouth–Caen for value from the south coast, then Le Havre for speed.
3. 🚘 Calais ferry & the Channel Tunnel (driving)
Calais → Rouen: ~230 km (about 2h15–2h30 drive on the A16/A28)
The Dover–Calais routes (Dover–Dunkerque with DFDS, Dover–Calais with P&O, or the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle with a 35-minute train ride) are the classic budget choice for drivers. Crossings are cheap and frequent — every 30 minutes or so at peak times — and you're flexible on timing since you simply arrive at the terminal.
The trade-off is the longer French drive: expect about 2.5 hours from Calais to Rouen, mostly on toll highways (autoroutes). Tolls for the Calais–Rouen run typically come to around €20–€25 each way, which you'll want to budget for on top of the crossing.
4. 🚆 Eurostar + train via Paris
London → Paris: ~2h20 Eurostar · Paris → Rouen: ~1h15 TER from Gare Saint-Lazare
There's no direct train from London to Rouen, but the classic route is simple and pleasant for anyone who'd rather not drive:
- Take the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord (about 2h20).
- Transfer across Paris to Gare Saint-Lazare (a cross-Paris Metro/RER trip of roughly 30–40 minutes).
- Ride the frequent TER regional train from Paris Saint-Lazare to Rouen Rive Droite — about 1h15, with the station a short walk or tram ride from the Armada quays.
Door-to-door it works out to around five hours — competitive with driving once you factor in parking worries at the quays. Fares vary widely, from roughly £58 for off-peak second-class through to £170+ on full-fare Eurostar. Booking Eurostar early makes a huge difference. 5. ✈️ Flying to Paris (and beyond)
For most travellers, flying adds more hassle than it saves. Getting to Paris CDG or Orly, then taking the train to Rouen (via Paris or via the direct CDG–Rouen connections), typically works out slower and pricier than the channel options above.
That said, if you're travelling from Scotland, the North East or Ireland where the drive/ferry to the channel is long, a cheap flight to Paris CDG plus the onward train can genuinely be competitive on time. The main tip is the same as everywhere: book early and protect the connection — missed connections at CDG in June are not how you want to start the Armada.

🚗 Driving in Normandy: what to know
If you drive, a few things will make the trip smoother:
- Drive on the right — the same side as most of Europe, which takes five minutes to adjust to from the UK.
- Autoroute tolls: the A28 (Calais/Rouen) and A13 are toll roads. Use the "télépéage" lanes with a Sanef card, or pay cash/card at the barriers.

The Armada runs 17–27 June 2027, and the two weekends around it are the busiest. Here's our suggested timeline:
- Now (autumn 2026): set fare alerts on ferry and Eurostar sites; car-ferry capacity for that week sells out first.
