Beyond the city
The prettiest villages near Rouen.
Half-timbered hamlets, riverside ports and abbey ruins — some of Normandy's loveliest villages are within an hour of Rouen.
- La Bouille — a postcard village on the Seine just 20 minutes away, reached by a little ferry; also a prime Grande Parade viewpoint.
- Lyons-la-Forêt — one of France's officially "most beautiful villages", a cluster of half-timbered houses in a great beech forest (about 45 min).
- Le Bec-Hellouin — another of the "plus beaux villages", famous for its serene Benedictine abbey (about 50 min).
- Les Andelys — crowned by Richard the Lionheart's Château Gaillard, with sweeping Seine views (about 40 min).
- Ry — the village said to have inspired Flaubert's Madame Bovary (about 30 min).
- Jumièges — the majestic ruins of a great riverside abbey, "the most beautiful ruin in France" (about 30 min).
How to do it
These are easiest by car — see day trips from Rouen for routes, or pair a couple in one loop along the Seine. La Bouille and Jumièges also sit on the route of the closing parade.
