The combination works because the Armada's peak hours are 11:00–17:00 on the quays. By heading to Giverny early (arriving at opening time at 09:30), you can enjoy the gardens before the crowds arrive and be back in Rouen by early afternoon for the ships.

Option 1: Train from Rouen to Giverny
The nearest station to Giverny is Vernon — Giverny, on the Paris–Rouen–Le Havre line. From Rouen-Rive-Droite station, the journey takes about 50 minutes.
Step by step
- Rouen-Rive-Droite → Vernon — Direct TER trains run roughly hourly. Check current times at SNCF Connect. A return ticket costs around €20–25.
- Vernon station → Giverny — A shuttle bus meets most trains (€10 return, about 15 minutes). Alternatively, it's a pleasant 5 km walk or a quick taxi ride (€15–20).
- Giverny gardens — Monet's house and gardens are a 5-minute walk from the shuttle drop-off. Book your timed entry online in advance to skip the queue.
Recommended schedule: Catch the 08:30 or 09:00 train from Rouen, arrive at Giverny by 10:00, explore for 2–3 hours, and take the 13:30 or 14:00 shuttle back to Vernon to be in Rouen by 15:00.
🚆 Train tip for Armada week
During the Armada, TER adds extra carriages on the Rouen–Vernon line, but trains still get busy. Buy your tickets on the SNCF Connect app in advance and validate them at the platform terminal before boarding.
Option 2: Guided tour from Rouen
If you'd rather not worry about train times and shuttle buses, several tour operators run half-day trips from Rouen to Giverny. These typically include:

- Take the A13 motorway towards Paris
- Exit at Vernon / Giverny (exit 16)
- Follow the D5 towards Giverny — about 45 minutes total

The Fondation Claude Monet gardens are open daily (no closing day) from 1 April to 1 November, 10:00–18:00, last admission 17:30. Outside this season the gardens are closed for winter maintenance.
