⛵ What is the Grande Parade?
The Grande Parade is the spectacular closing act of the Armada de Rouen. On the final day of the festival, the tall ships — three-masters, school ships, naval vessels and the exquisite sailing ship fleet — weigh anchor and steam one last time down the River Seine towards the estuary at Honfleur and Le Havre.
What makes it unforgettable is the send-off. As each vessel passes, the crew climb into the rigging and crowd along the yardarms, sailors release the great sails, and the crowd erupts in applause and flag-waving. It is widely described as one of the world's great nautical spectacles — the moment millions of visitors come to Rouen for.
📅 When does it happen in 2027?
The Armada de Rouen 2027 runs from Thursday 17 to Sunday 27 June 2027 (the 9th edition of the festival). The Grande Parade traditionally takes place on the final Sunday morning — so for 2027 that is Sunday 27 June 2027, from around 10:00.
In Rouen the tall ships begin to leave in the morning, with departures staggered through the day. At the head of the convoy, the lifting Pont Flaubert rises to let the masts through — one of the most iconic images of the whole Armada. From there the fleet sails downstream, passing the riverside villages through the afternoon, before reaching the estuary. As the vessels pass each downstream port they are greeted by local celebrations, fanfares and picnicking crowds.
Note that times are confirmed close to the event on the official programme. Arrive a couple of hours early wherever you choose to stand — perfect for finding a picnic base, and a spot at the front.

🏙️ Watching in Rouen — where the ships leave
If you want the emotion of the very first sails unfurling, stay in Rouen itself. The most famous vantage point is the Pont Flaubert, the great lift bridge on the northern edge of the quays. When the bridge rises to let the tall ships pass, you are face to face with the masts — it is the postcard shot of the event and it draws a huge crowd from 8:00 onwards.
The quays of Rouen — particularly around the Rive Droite between the Pont Guillaume-le-Conquérant and the Pont Boieldieu, and on the Rive Gauche near the île Lacroix — offer the front-row experience as vessels weigh anchor. Expect shoulder-to-shoulder crowds but extraordinary energy: bands, horns, and sailors waving from the rails.

Prefer more space and a calm, family-friendly atmosphere? Head downstream of Rouen. As the fleet sails towards the sea, the crowds thin out and the riverside villages offer gorgeous, photogenic settings — the best of both worlds.
- La Bouille (~30 min by car southwest of Rouen) — a pretty riverside village that greets the ships with fanfares and a lively quayside. Backed by the Côte des Deux-Amants, it is one of the most scenic spots on the route.
- Sahurs — small hamlet on the left bank with a quiet, open view of the bend in the Seine. Great for a picnic with space to spread out.
- Duclair (~30 km) — a lively port town where the parade passes close to the quay. Regular partner of the Armada, always festively decorated.
- Le Trait & Saint-Nicolas-de-Bliquetuit — brilliant spots to see the ships turn and straighten into the long reach, often facing head-on as they approach.
- Rives-en-Seine (Caudebec-en-Caux) & Villequier — the deep-water bend offers dramatic close passes; Caudebec is a charming medieval town to explore afterwards.
- Jumièges — watch the fleet glide past the ruins of the great abbey on the riverbank. Unforgettable pairing of Norman heritage and maritime spectacle.
- Normandy Bridge & Honfleur — near the wide mouth of the estuary, ships pass beneath the vast Pont de Normandie. In Honfleur you can stand almost at the foot of the bridge and see them sail under the towering deck — a majestic finale.

🛥️ Watching from the water
An alternative to the banks is to join the thousands of pleasure boats and excursion launches that form a vast unofficial escort around the fleet. From the water you get a sailor's view: looking up at towering masts as the ships heave past, with the whole flotilla bobbing on the swell.
Options include sightseeing cruises from Rouen, chartered launches, and open deck boats that follow part of the route downstream. Prices vary, demand is high, and the best vessels are booked months out during Armada year. The family-run river cruises leave from the quays; check timetables once the 2027 programme is released.
✅ Top tips for a perfect parade day
- Arrive very early. For the Pont Flaubert and the main quays, aim to be in position 1–2 hours before the first departure. Downstream villages fill up 60–90 minutes ahead.
- Pack a picnic & water. Food trucks exist near the big spots, but queues are long. Normandy's answer: bread, cheese, cider and a blanket on the bank.
- Bring binoculars. The most spectacular moments — sailors in the rigging, sails being loosed — happen high above the hulls. Binoculars transform the experience.
- Check the Sunday programme for concerts and the fireworks that close the festival the evening before, on Saturday 26 June. Combine both for an unforgettable weekend.
- Plan transport in advance. Roads near the quays close on parade day. Use park-and-ride, trains or the tram, and know your return route before the crowd leaves.
