Chantilly is the château most Parisians secretly prefer: smaller and far quieter than Versailles, but with a world-class art collection, a magnificent library and the spectacular Great Stables built for horses. I went up on a clear weekday and had whole galleries to myself.
Why visit Chantilly
The Château de Chantilly sits on a moat ringed by forest, 50 km north of Paris. Its two main buildings hold the Condé Museum — the second-largest old-master collection in France after the Louvre — plus the Gérard table, the Chantilly porcelain and one of France's last great princely libraries.
Next door, the Great Stables are an architectural wonder built to house 240 horses and hounds; today they're a living horse museum with daily shows in summer. Add the Le Nôtre gardens and you have a relaxed half-to-full-day trip that beats the crowds of Versailles.
Chantilly day trip from Paris or Rouen
From Paris, the RER D runs to Chantilly-Gouvieux in about 25 minutes, then a 15-minute walk through the park to the château. From Rouen, take the Intercités train to Paris then the RER D — around 2 hours each way — or drive the 120 km south on the A16/A1.
A door-to-door tour bundles the transfer and a timed skip-the-line ticket, which is worth it in high season. Solo, aim to arrive at opening, do the museum first, then the stables show and end with the gardens and the picnic lawn.
