How to visit Monet's famous gardens during the Armada 2027 — whether you have a morning, a full day, or just a few hours.
You're in Rouen for the Armada 2027. The tall ships are spectacular — but Normandy has more to offer, and Monet's gardens at Giverny are the most popular day trip from the city. The question is how to fit them both in without the stress.
This guide covers every option: train from Rouen, guided tour, driving yourself, and the practical details that make the difference between a magical day and a rushed one.
Giverny is only 65 km southeast of Rouen — about 45 minutes by car or 1h15 by train via Vernon. The gardens are open daily from late March through October, which means they'll be in full bloom throughout the Armada (17–27 June 2027).
The combination works because the Armada's peak hours are 11:00–17:00 on the quays. By heading to Giverny early (arriving at opening time at 09:30), you can enjoy the gardens before the crowds arrive and be back in Rouen by early afternoon for the ships.
The nearest station to Giverny is Vernon — Giverny, on the Paris–Rouen–Le Havre line. From Rouen-Rive-Droite station, the journey takes about 50 minutes.
Recommended schedule: Catch the 08:30 or 09:00 train from Rouen, arrive at Giverny by 10:00, explore for 2–3 hours, and take the 13:30 or 14:00 shuttle back to Vernon to be in Rouen by 15:00.
🚆 Train tip for Armada week
During the Armada, TER adds extra carriages on the Rouen–Vernon line, but trains still get busy. Buy your tickets on the SNCF Connect app in advance and validate them at the platform terminal before boarding.
If you'd rather not worry about train times and shuttle buses, several tour operators run half-day trips from Rouen to Giverny. These typically include:
Prices range from €60–90 per person depending on group size. Tours usually last 4–5 hours, leaving you the afternoon free for the Armada.
Check our tours page for recommended operators and booking links.
If you have a car, Giverny is a straightforward drive from Rouen:
Parking is available at the Giverny parking lot (payant, about €6–8 for the day). During the Armada, book your parking spot online in advance — June is peak season.
🚗 Combine with other Normandy sights
With a car, you can visit Giverny in the morning and continue to Étretat (1h drive) or Honfleur (1h15) in the afternoon — a perfect full-day loop from Rouen.
Don't rush through — the magic is in the details.
Giverny is absolutely doable as a day trip from the Armada, and it's one of the best ways to see two of Normandy's greatest attractions in one visit. Whether you take the train, join a tour, or drive, plan ahead — Giverny in June is popular, and during the Armada it's even busier than usual.
